Municipal elections are held in Karachi, Sindh every fourth year. Candidates from various political parties run for the post of city mayor in Karachi. The election is an occasion to make public one's political opinions and to get a glimpse of political leaders.

 In Karachi, the election is also a test of the political parties' strength and a declaration of the prevailing social and economic classes. The elections in Karachi are conducted by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The general election committee announces the election dates when they are finalized.

Then a notification is issued to announce the candidates. The nominations must be filed by 8 days prior to the date of nomination, which is 14 days before the date of election. Candidates can file their nomination from their residence or office. All candidates must have a group or party supporting them, but they can be individualists without party backing. 



There are two kinds: direct elections and indirect elections. In direct elections, candidates run for office without any restrictions; in indirect elections, parties decide on the candidate for each post.
