Public Accounts Committee seeks list of those who renounced citizenship from NADRA

The National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) Chairman Tariq Malik on Wednesday revealed that more than 500 people with "sensitive information" have renounced Pakistani citizenship following their retirement.

According to Express News, he made the disclosure during a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). The body also called for the list of those who renounced their citizenship.

During the meeting, PAC Chairman Noor Alam Khan asked how many people were expelled on corruption charges in Nadra to which Tariq Malik replied that 43 people had been expelled so far while the investigation is underway against 2,600 people.

Noor argued that the people who were sacked had been re-recruited. The committee sought details of all those who were re-appointed after being expelled.

In July, data shared by the interior ministry revealed that around 5.78% of employees working in Nadra were recruited from the armed forces. The database authority’s staff comprises 19,161 employees whereas around 1,109 of them belong to the armed forces – roughly 6 percent of the total staff.

5G technology in Pakistan.

Is there 5G network in Pakistan?

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has prepared a policy framework aimed at rolling out 5G and advanced technology for it will be available by April 2023, said PTA Chairman Amir Azeem Bajwa.25-Feb-2022

Number of cities in which 5G is available 2022 by country.

  • When 5G SIM will launch?

Airtel says its 5G service will be launching in a month, which is likely to be October for those living in the key metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and a few more. Airtel has plans to cover all of urban India with its 5G network by the end of 2023.

  • In which countries 5G is available?

China and the United States are significantly ahead of other nations in their 5G rollout, with a combined 652 cities in which 5G is available.

The main advantages of the 5G are a greater speed in the transmissions, a lower latency and therefore greater capacity of remote execution, a greater number of connected devices and the possibility of implementing virtual networks (network slicing), providing more adjusted connectivity to concrete needs.

  • Greater speed in transmissions

Speed in transmissions can approach 15 or 20 Gbps. By being able to enjoy a higher speed we can access files, programs and remote applications in a totally direct and without waiting. By intensifying the use of the cloud, all devices (mobile phones, computers, etc.) will depend less on the internal memory and on the accumulation of data and it won’t be necessary to install a large number of processors on some objects because computing can be done on the Cloud.

For example, being able to activate software remotely as if it were executed in personal devices, will allow not having installed the mobile applications (APPs) in the terminal and executing them directly from the cloud. Just as it will no longer be necessary to store the information in the memory of the device (photos, videos, etc).

  • Lower latency

Latency is the time that elapses since we give an order on our device until the action occurs. In 5G the latency will be ten times less than in 4G, being able to perform remote actions in real time.

Thanks to this low latency and the increase of the sensors, it is possible to control the machinery of an industrial plant, control logistics or remote transport, surgical operations in which the doctor can intervene a patient who is at another side of the world with the help of precision instrumentation managed remotely or the complete control of remote transport systems, automated and without driver

  • Greater number of connected devices

With 5G the number of devices that can be connected to the network increases greatly, it will go to millionaire scale per square kilometer.

All connected devices will have access to instant connections to the internet, which in real time will exchange information with each other. This will favor the IOT.

It is anticipated that a common home will have a hundred connected devices sending and receiving information in real time. If we think of industrial plants we would speak of thousands of connected devices.

This greater number of connected devices will allow the smart cities and the autonomous car.

For example, by placing sensors in different points and objects in the city, a large part of it can be monitored. If you share the information of the sensors of the cars and those of the city, and these exchange data you can improve the quality of life of the cities, facilitate the navigation of the autonomous car (choose better routes, reduce the number of accidents, find available parking spaces, etc.)

  • Network slicing

The 5G also allows to implement virtual networks (network slicing), create subnets, in order to provide connectivity more adjusted to specific needs.

The creation of subnetworks will give specific characteristics to a part of the network, being a programmable network and will allow to prioritize connections, as could be the emergencies in front of other users, applying for example different latencies or prioritizing them in the connection to the network so that they can’t be affected by possible overloads of the mobile network.

  • What are the advantages of 5G?

The main advantages of the 5G are a greater speed in the transmissions, a lower latency and therefore greater capacity of remote execution, a greater number of connected devices and the possibility of implementing virtual networks (network slicing), providing more adjusted connectivity to concrete needs.

  • What is 5G technology advantages and disadvantages?

4G cellular networks often get congested which will result in various problems while accessing important data. On the other hand, 5G networks allow users to avoid them due to better speed and more bandwidth. The main disadvantage of 5G is that it has limited global coverage and is available only in specific locations.

  • How will 5G change the world?

5G's 20-fold improvement over 4G speeds opens up many possibilities. But aside from its faster speeds, it also allows more users to connect to one tower, avoiding network congestion during conventions and mass gatherings. Furthermore, 5G networks offer improved better latency over the previous generation.

  • Is 5G faster than WIFI?

Opensignal's latest analysis demonstrates that 5G greatly improves the real-world speeds that users experience. And, even more significantly, 5G offers faster average download speeds than Wifi in seven out of eight leading 5G countries

Imran says country needs fresh elections

Imran says country needs fresh elections

PTI chief tells Punjab lawmakers revolution knocking on the door

Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD:

PTI chairman and deposed premier Imran Khan on Sunday said snap polls were needed by the whole country and not by his party alone.

“Revolution is knocking on the door and it should be given way through peaceful elections,” the PTI chief told members of the Punjab Assembly and cabinet during a meeting.

The huddle was held at Punjab House in Islamabad to discuss the country’s overall political scene, situation arising out of torrential rains and flash floods, administrative goals in the province and the need for having elections in the country at the earliest.

The ex-premier maintained that the success in the Punjab by-elections was an expression of public’s confidence in the PTI.

He added that Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi of the PML-Q was a politician who believed in practically achieving targets and PTI lawmakers should support him for this purpose.

Imran further said the people of Punjab were expecting that the PTI would implement the agenda of true freedom.

The PTI chairman has frequently accused the US of conducting “regime change operation” in the country and imposing rulers of its liking.

He claimed that he was ousted from power as part of the ‘US-orchestrated plan’ because he was pursuing an “independent foreign policy”.

In his short speech to the provincial lawmakers, the PTI chief said the Punjab cabinet and the province’s parliamentary party should stand firm with the people on the narrative of “true freedom”.

Maintaining that the people were with the PTI, Imran said that the party would have to move towards elections soon.

During the meeting, the PTI chairman and the provincial lawmakers discussed the “ban on media, revenge tactics against political opponents and violations of human rights”.

Four resolutions were also passed during the meeting.

In the first resolution, the participants expressed solidarity with the flood victims across the country and lauded the PTI chairman’s efforts to generate funds for the affected people through telethons.

Through the second resolution, they condemned the “economic destruction” by the incumbent government and lashed out at it for burdening people with sky-rocketing inflation.

The third resolution expressed full confidence in the leadership of the PTI chairman and the fourth resolution condemned the “shameful propaganda” based on religious hatred against Imran disseminated via PTV at state expense.

The participants of the meeting agreed to improve the cooperation between the coalition parties in Punjab government.

Imran and the provincial leadership expressed their full confidence in the Punjab chief minister's leadership and the administrative measures and plans that he had taken so far.

A strategy to solve the problems being faced by the members of the provincial assembly at an individual level was also finalised.

The former premier congratulated the provincial lawmakers on the historic win in the Punjab by-polls, instructing PTI members to stay close to the people.

In his media talk after the meeting, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said the current situation of the country would either lead to general elections or a revolution.

He added that elections were the country’s most important issue and they would lead to political stability.

Former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the PTI was demanding free and fair elections, but the government was running away from them, causing harm to the country.

Pakistan mulls importing Russia oil on deferred payment

Pakistan mulls importing Russia oil on deferred payment

Official rejects claims of previous PTI govt of a proposal on table for importing oil from Russia on discounted rate

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan can import oil from Russia on deferred payment as both countries are in talks to discuss the possibility, a senior government functionary revealed on Sunday after the recent meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Samarkand.

The official, who was part of the prime minister’s delegation, told The Express Tribune that PM Shehbaz at least held three meetings with President Putin. "One was formal and the rest were informal," the official, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, added.

The official, when asked, rejected claims of the previous government if there was any proposal on the table for importing oil from Russia on discounted rate.

"What we have discussed during the recent interaction with the Russian side is the possibility of importing oil on deferred payment," the official said.

Russia has shown inclination to consider the proposal, the official said.

If the proposal is meterlised it will be a landmark development given that Pakistan imports oil from Gulf countries and in the past Saudi Arabia and UAE supplied Pakistan oil on deferred payment.

It is not clear if the government can pursue the option given the likely opposition from the United States.

A source in the foreign office disclosed that the US has never explicitly asked Pakistan not to import oil from Russia but "advised us that it is better if we don't enter into such venture with Russia".

Former prime minister Imran Khan has repeatedly accused the US for being behind his ouster in April. Imran said he was punished for pursuing an ‘independent foreign policy’ particularly for his efforts to deepen ties with Russia. The US has always denied meddling in the internal affairs of Pakistan.

The recent meeting between Shehbaz and Putin, according to observers, dispelled such conspiracy theories.

The transcript released by the Russia side after the meeting between Shehbaz and Putin did not drop any hint if Moscow was not willing to work with the new government often labelled as the US "puppet" by Imran and his supporters.

Putin while stressing that Russia viewed Pakistan as priority in Southeast Asia and Asia overall had invited Prime Minister Shehbaz to visit Moscow.

Also read: Russia has offered Pakistan wheat in addition to gas: Asif

The Russian strongman sought progress on Pakistan Steam Gas Pipeline as well as making offer to supply Pakistan gas through pipeline. The steam gas pipeline project, in limbo since 2015, will supply LNG from Port Qasim in Karachi to Punjab. The pipeline will be laid by Russian company but the work on the project is yet to kick off because of likely US sanctions.

Defense Minister Khawja Asif told a news conference on Saturday that Russia also offered supply of wheat to Pakistan in view of the potential shortage of food grain due to the devastating floods that have caused massive damage to the crops.

Initial estimates suggest that agriculture growth in Pakistan may contract for the first time in more than two decades. The standing waters in Sindh may delay the sowing of wheat this season triggering the shortage. Russia is one of the largest exporters of wheat.

This all happens at a time when there are efforts underway to reset the troubled relationship between Pakistan and the US. A senior adviser of the US Secretary of State recently visited Islamabad while the Biden Administration approved $450 million sale of F-16 equipment in a sign that Washington wants to maintain a working relationship with Islamabad.

Prime Minister Shehbaz, who is visiting New York for the UN General Assembly session, is expected to meet the senior Biden administration officials in the next few days.

Apple : New iPhones have Qualcomm satellite modem, new Apple radio chips

New iPhones have Qualcomm satellite modem, new Apple radio chips

iPhone 14 contains Qualcomm Inc chip that can talk to satellites and other additional custom-designed Apple component.

Apple Inc's iPhone 14 models contain a Qualcomm Inc chip that can talk to satellites, but have additional custom-designed Apple components used in the phone's biggest new feature, according to an analysis of the phone by iFixit and an Apple statement.

Apple released its iPhone 14 lineup on Friday. One of the major new features is the ability to connect to satellites to send emergency messages when there is no WiFi or cellular data connection.

Apple said earlier this month that the iPhone 14 models contain new hardware that makes possible the emergency message service, which Apple plans to turn on with a software update coming in November. Apple did not give details about the satellite-specific hardware.

iFixit, a San Luis Obispo, California-based firm that disassembles iPhones and other consumer electronics to assess how easily they can be repaired, took apart an iPhone 14 Pro Max model on Friday, revealing a Qualcomm X65 modem chip.

The Qualcomm chip provides 5G connectivity for cellular networks but is also capable of using what is called band n53, the frequency band used by satellites from Globalstar.

Globalstar earlier this month announced a deal in which Apple will take up to 85% of Globalstar's satellite network capacity to enable Apple's new emergency messaging feature.

In a statement to Reuters on Saturday, Apple said there is additional proprietary hardware and software in the iPhone 14 for the new messaging feature.

“iPhone 14 includes custom radio frequency components, and new software designed entirely by Apple, that together enable Emergency SOS via satellite on new iPhone 14 models," Apple said in a statement.

Fuel prices to come down by 8 paisa per liter: finance minister

Miftah Ismail assures masses that electricity tariffs will start declining from October this year

Amid the coalition government’s indecisiveness over fortnightly fuel price change, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail has said that the prices of petroleum products will witness a nominal change of Re0.08 per litre.

A Boy holds a nozzle to pump petrol into a vehicle at a fuel station

Speaking to a local TV channel on Saturday, the federal minister said the petrol or diesel will either be increased or decreased and added that the final decision on fuel prices will be taken today (Sunday).

Speaking about the declining rupee value, Miftah said he cannot predict the exchange rate of the local currency against the dollar but expressed hope that the rupee will witness stability.

However, he added that the government will not intervene to control the rupee value.

He also assured the masses that the electricity tariffs will start declining from October.

The people would enjoy maximum relief in the next two months. Relief and rehabilitation of flood-torn areas are the priorities of the coalition government, he added.

The minister said Qatar, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia and Asian Development Bank (ADB) are showing keen interest in various sectors of Pakistan.

Qatar was seeking a $3 billion plan to invest in the stock exchange, solar and LNG plants, he added.

Collectively, he said, investment of about $5 billion would be made in different sectors of Pakistan. The ADB alone would provide funds worth $1.5 billion to kick start projects of public interest, he added.

Expressing optimism about the support of world countries, he said: “We will overcome all difficulties being faced in the economic and business sectors with the help of friendly countries and international organisations.”

To a question about the confidence of investors in this region, Miftah said that the government is taking all possible measures to bring improvement in the stock market, currency, and investors' confidence.
